A lively 1977 street scene on Cromwell Road, looking towards the corner with Grenville Place in South Kensington. The traffic is a perfect snapshot of the era, with black taxis, a Ford Capri, a Hillman Hunter and a scattering of compact European cars weaving through the junction. The standout vehicle, however, is the distinctive cream-and-maroon Bedford VAL coach—instantly recognisable by its unusual twin-steer front axles. Popular with tour operators throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the VAL became a familiar sight on London’s main arteries, especially around hotel districts and the nearby West London Air Terminal.
Victorian terraces with ornate stucco façades frame the scene, softened by the full spring foliage of the large plane tree that dominates the centre of the image. At the far left, a British Airways billboard still stands beside the former air terminal, where passengers once checked in for Heathrow flights without ever leaving Kensington.
