A brilliantly atmospheric slice of late-70s West End nightlife. Cranbourn Street, linking Leicester Square with Charing Cross Road, was ablaze with neon in 1977, and this photo captures the strip at its commercial peak.
On the left, the glowing red signage of Pizzaland – one of Britain’s earliest and most widespread pizzeria chains – sits alongside the familiar round logo of Wimpy, the pioneering British fast-food burger bar. Both were staples of affordable eating in the era and hugely popular with cinema-goers.
The large illuminated marquee belongs to the Warner West End cinema, one of the busiest and best-known picture houses in London. Its giant displays often advertised major Hollywood releases; in 1977 it was one of the key venues for blockbuster openings.
Further along, you can see the distinctive yellow and blue vertical lights of Talk of the Town, the legendary cabaret venue based inside the Hippodrome. Through the 1960s and 70s it hosted everyone from Shirley Bassey to Tom Jones, and by 1977 it was still one of London’s premier nightspots.
Crowds pour along the pavement, taxis and saloons line the kerb, and the whole scene glows with that unmistakable West End mix of glamour, noise and energy — a perfect snapshot of London at night in the late 1970s.
