This 1989 view looks west along Coventry Street from Wardour Street, capturing a busy West End junction packed with late-1980s detail. On the right stands the old Rialto cinema, its large blank frontage and vertical sign still dominating the street before the building later became a casino, while closer to the camera is a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that has since given way to Shake Shack. The scene is full of useful everyday details, including black cabs, red double-decker buses, a souvenir stand with balloons, traffic lights, green Westminster litter bins and a mix of shopfronts and snack bars typical of this entertainment district. The architecture shows the familiar layering of the area, with ornate older façades and domed corner buildings framing the roadway, while the traffic and pedestrians give it the unmistakable feel of central London at the end of the 1980s.
