A 1970s colour photo of the west portico of St Paul’s Church overlooking the bustling Covent Garden Market during the latter half of the 20th century. The scene from 1974 shows the final year of the wholesale market’s operation at this historic site, with delivery lorries, including a large blue box van and a brown flatbed truck, parked on the cobblestone square. Stacked wooden crates and mesh sacks filled with produce are piled high in the foreground, while a market official in a dark uniform stands near the church entrance, which bears a sign identifying the building as “built by Inigo Jones 1633.” For over three centuries, this area served as London’s premier fruit and vegetable exchange before the traders relocated to New Covent Garden Market in Nine Elms in November 1974. The church, often known as the “Actors’ Church” due to its long association with the theatrical community, remains a central landmark of the now-pedestrianised piazza.
