Cornhill in Ipswich in 1956, seen at a busy town-centre junction beneath a web of trolleybus overhead wires. The view includes the ornate Lloyds Bank building on the right, the entrance to Lloyds Avenue, and part of the Grimwade’s building on the left, with shopfronts, traffic lights, “No Right Turn” signs, cyclists, pedestrians and several 1950s cars adding to the street activity. The car nearest the camera appears to be a two-tone Standard Vanguard Phase III, registered TBJ 732, while another dark saloon passes through the junction. Ipswich had used electric trolleybuses since the 1920s, and the overhead wiring in this photograph is a strong reminder of the town’s mid-century public transport system as well as the commercial life of the Cornhill area.
