Drivers along U.S. 60 (now State Route 60/Interstate 215) once pulled off at Colony Kitchen, a classic mid-century California coffee shop offering a cocktail lounge, hearty breakfasts, and round-the-clock road-trip comfort food. Perched above the freeway with panoramic views across what was then mostly farmland and open scrub, the restaurant served travelers long before Moreno Valley underwent its explosive suburban growth of the 1980s and 1990s.
Today, the area looks very different — the freeway has been widened, additional interchanges built, and the Colony Kitchen building was demolished sometime in the 1980s or early 1990s, replaced by newer commercial development.
The narrow two-lane freeway below later became a major Inland Empire commuter spine, widened multiple times as Riverside and Moreno Valley expanded. Colony Kitchen is long gone, but this photo captures a moment when the desert edge of Riverside County still felt wide-open — and a roadside meal offered both a pause and a view.
