Clock House, Thorpe Bay, Essex, 1950s. This vintage colour photograph shows a seaside tobacconist and confectioner at Clock House, a familiar sight in British holiday towns during the post-war years. The shopfront is densely packed with period advertising, including cigarette brands such as Players Navy Cut, Senior Service, Capstan, Nelson Tipped Cigarettes, and Old Holborn tobacco, reflecting an era before advertising restrictions reshaped high streets.
Soft drinks and sweets are also heavily promoted, with prominent Tizer signage alongside confectionery, biscuits, and seaside treats aimed at day-trippers and holidaymakers heading to the nearby beach. Painted across the fascia are services typical of the time: tea trays for the beach, minerals, ices, roll and butter, cakes, and pastries — emphasising the shop’s role as a general holiday provisions store rather than just a tobacconist.
The proprietors stand proudly in the doorway, smartly dressed despite the casual seaside setting, adding a strong human element to the scene.
