Class 37 diesel D6802 at King’s Cross in 1965, standing in the platform with headcode 1B34 after working the 08.34 Monday to Saturday, or 10.35 on Sundays, from Cleethorpes to London King’s Cross. The train ran by the East Lincolnshire route via Louth, Boston, Spalding Town and Peterborough, making this a particularly interesting record of a service pattern that has long since disappeared. The photograph is rich in main line detail, including the dark green bodywork, small yellow warning panels, the large four-character headcode box, the curving cab front and the great arched trainshed of King’s Cross above. The railwayman posed on the platform adds a human touch, while the destination and route make the image an especially valuable reminder of the once-important through trains linking the Lincolnshire coast and East Midlands with London before later closures reshaped the network.
