A quietly atmospheric view of Parliament Square in 1974, with Sir Winston Churchill’s statue standing firm against a misty London morning. Unveiled in 1973 and only a year old in this photograph, the sculpture by Ivor Roberts-Jones quickly became one of the most recognisable landmarks in the square. Churchill stands in his characteristic pose — hunched slightly forward, hands clasped behind his back, surveying the Palace of Westminster.
The scene is beautifully subdued: bare winter trees line the edge of the square, and the soft fog gives the imposing government buildings behind — including HM Treasury — an almost monochrome silhouette. To the left, another Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, can be seen atop his plinth, linking two eras of British wartime leadership in a single frame.
