The Port Authority Heliport stands prominently to the right of the scene. Built to accommodate both commercial and demonstration helicopter flights, it featured two restaurants and offered sightseeing rides aboard Sikorsky S-61 helicopters. One of its most famous moments came in August 1965 when The Beatles landed here en route to their legendary Shea Stadium concert. After the fair closed, the building survived and today operates as Terrace on the Park, used for weddings, events, and banquets.
To the left is the fantastically oversized Chrysler Pavilion, designed to resemble a giant V8 engine complete with pistons, valves and crankshaft—part of Chrysler’s imaginative “fair-within-a-fair” complex. In the foreground stands the SKF Pavilion tower, an 80-foot column representing the ball-bearing manufacturer, whose exhibits demonstrated the unseen mechanisms that “keep the wheels of modern industry turning.”
