A night-time street scene at the intersection of 49th Street and Sixth Avenue in New York City, photographed during the Christmas season in December 1972. Office towers rise on both sides of the avenue, their illuminated windows forming a dense Midtown backdrop. Trees lining the street are decorated with festive Christmas lights, adding colour and warmth to the winter cityscape.
At the centre of the scene stands a tall, stainless steel abstract sculpture set within the streetscape, framed by traffic lights, street lamps and the glow of surrounding buildings. To the right, the vertical neon signage of Radio City Music Hall is clearly visible, identifying the location as part of the Rockefeller Center area. The photograph captures the atmosphere of Midtown Manhattan in the early 1970s, combining corporate architecture, public art and seasonal decoration along one of the city’s busiest avenues.
