This authentic 1960s color photograph captures the “TV Stars of 63” chimpanzee show at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Michigan, in 1963. The image showcases several chimpanzees dressed in colorful red hats and blue and yellow outfits, skillfully riding miniature ponies around a circular ring. The background is decorated with vibrant mid-century murals featuring “Jet Stones” and “Grind Stones” (parodies of The Jetsons and The Flintstones), as well as a large “Telstar Circus Time” sign and a geometric globe hanging from the ceiling. A trainer in a white shirt stands in the center of the ring, guiding the performance under the covered outdoor theater. This high-resolution scan provides a fascinating, though now dated, look at animal entertainment history at one of America’s major zoological parks. This digital download is an incredible historical record of Detroit history, perfect to print for yourself as vintage Michigan wall art.
