A quiet, almost eerie view of Cheapside in 1974, looking west toward St Paul’s Churchyard and the former General Post Office headquarters in the distance. At this time the east–west spine of the City still carried the pared-back post-war architecture of the 1950s and 60s — including all the buildings visible on the right-hand side of the photograph.
Every building on that side of the street, right up to the church of St Mary-le-Bow, has since been completely demolished and replaced, swept away during the major City redevelopment schemes of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The small independent shops, the Portland-stone commercial blocks, and the projecting Guardian Royal Exchange clock were all casualties of this transformation.
