This 1977 view shows the main building at Charnock Richard Services on the M6, with its long glass-fronted upper storey, stone-faced lower walls and late-modernist motorway architecture very much of its time. Parked outside is a pleasing cross-section of everyday mid-1970s traffic, including a Land Rover at the left, a Mini in the foreground, a green Ford Cortina, a blue Triumph saloon and a beige Renault 6, with several other family cars and RAC-liveried vehicles beyond. The “Motor Chef” sign and the takeaway food kiosk add more period detail, capturing the sort of roadside stop that became a familiar part of long-distance British motoring in the motorway age. More than just a record of individual cars, the photograph preserves the look of a service area when both the architecture and the parked vehicles combined to create a very recognisable 1970s roadside scene.
