A superb elevated view of Charing Cross station in 1971, captured before the sweeping redevelopments that reshaped the area in the 1980s and 1990s. The station’s distinctive triple-arched trainshed, dating from the 1860s, is clearly visible here—its glass and iron roof survived until 1986, when it was removed to make way for the new postmodern Charing Cross office complex.
In the foreground, the Hungerford Railway Bridge carries Southern Region trains over the Thames, with the pedestrian catwalks still narrow and utilitarian decades before the Golden Jubilee Bridges were added. Two pleasure boats sit moored along Victoria Embankment, while the tree-lined Embankment Gardens create a green buffer between the river and the dense West End.
