This 1985 view captures the frontage of Charing Cross station and hotel with the ornate Victorian façade rising behind the entrance canopy, while the reconstructed Eleanor Cross dominates the right-hand side of the scene. At street level there is plenty of everyday period detail, including black London taxis, pedestrians with shopping bags and pushchairs, and a yellow Red Star Parcels van outside the station entrance, a reminder of British Rail’s once-familiar station-to-station parcels service. The direction sign for Trafalgar Square helps fix the location at one of central London’s busiest junctions, where rail travel, taxis, parcel traffic and sightseeing all met beneath the grand hotel frontage. It is a strong record of Charing Cross in the mid-1980s, before later changes to traffic, station forecourts and parcel services altered the character of the scene.
