A family rides the chairlift up Mount Baldy on a summer’s day in the 1950s, only a few years after the first lifts opened here in 1952. These early double chairs formed the heart of the new Mt Baldy Ski Lifts, carrying skiers to Baldy Notch in winter and sightseers into the high San Gabriel Mountains in the off-season. Although the equipment has been upgraded over the years, the main lift line is still in use today, taking visitors to the Top of the Notch for hiking, views and a meal above Los Angeles. This quiet mid-century scene captures Baldy at the start of its life as Southern California’s closest high-alpine escape—when a simple open chair, a long cable and a big sky counted as an adventure all by themselves.
