This authentic 1970s colour photograph, captured in 1975, documents the central hub of Castle Square (Y Maes) in Caernarfon, North Wales. The archival image, taken from an elevated position, features a variety of public transport vehicles of the era, including several single-decker buses in cream and maroon liveries parked along the designated bus stops. The pedestrianised area is dotted with historic monuments, including the prominent statue of Sir Hugh Owen and a second figure in the foreground overlooking the square from the castle-side pavement. Modern 1970s additions, such as a blue-and-white ice cream kiosk and orange plastic seating for an outdoor cafe, contrast with the traditional stone and slate architecture of the surrounding townhouses. The sky is filled with large, white cumulus clouds, casting soft shadows over the bustling town centre. This factual record preserves the mid-1970s urban layout and the daily commercial atmosphere of Caernarfon as it appeared in 1975.
