This 1980 view along Carnaby Street captures the famous shopping street in full bustle, with the large overhead sign proclaiming Carnaby Street Welcomes the World above a dense crowd of pedestrians. The scene is packed with useful period detail, including the street sign for Goulbert’s Place W1 on the left, the vertical This is Lady Jane of Carnaby Street sign, Carpe Diem, R & T, Open hairdresser signage, and a string of other fashion and specialist shopfronts running down both sides of the pedestrianised street. The spherical street lamps, packed pavements and varied shop displays show Carnaby Street in its post-1960s but still highly commercial phase, when it remained one of the West End’s best-known draws for fashion, browsing and people-watching. Rather than the boutique cool of its earlier Mod years, this is Carnaby Street as a crowded international retail attraction at the start of the 1980s, lively, touristy and unmistakably central London.
