This 1974 colour photograph looks north along pedestrianised Carnaby Street from the junction with Beak Street, capturing the street’s lively atmosphere in the mid-1970s. In the foreground, two buskers perform on the famous pink, yellow, and black geometric paving, one playing a banjo and the other an acoustic guitar, while a small crowd gathers to watch. Around them, pedestrians in flared jeans, patterned knitwear, and platform shoes pass well-known businesses including John Stephen and Pussy Galore Salon. To the left, several shop windows carry Sale signs, and a long line of hanging shop signs recedes into the distance. Although Carnaby Street first became internationally famous during the Swinging Sixties, scenes like this show how it remained a busy centre of youth culture and independent retail well into the 1970s.
