Looking north along pedestrianised Carnaby Street from Foubert’s Place in 1974, this colour photograph captures one of Soho’s most recognisable shopping streets during the mid-1970s. The bold pink, yellow, and black geometric paving stands out immediately, while above the road a large illuminated sign declares “Carnaby Street Welcomes The World,” a reminder of the area’s international reputation for fashion and youth culture. Pedestrians in flared trousers and wide-lapelled jackets pass familiar businesses including the René Interflora florist on the corner and the John Stephen boutique farther along the street. On the left, the frontage of James Galt is visible, while vertical signs for shops such as Lord John and Lady Jane can be seen stretching into the distance. Famous for its role in Swinging London during the 1960s, Carnaby Street remained a lively centre for independent shops and visitors well into the following decade.
