This 1975 colour photograph shows the Original Carnaby Market on the corner of Beak Street and Warwick Street in Soho, one of the best-known retail attractions in the area during the mid-1970s. Its distinctive entrance is topped by a large smiling figure of John Bull in a Union Jack waistcoat and yellow top hat, while green and white striped awnings run above the shopfronts. Hand-painted signs advertise “Fifty Stalls on Two Floors,” and the display windows are filled with contemporary fashions of the period. Shoppers in long coats, flared trousers, and other typical mid-seventies clothing can be seen entering the market or browsing outside. Having grown out of the boutique culture of the Swinging Sixties, this lively spot remained a popular destination for both locals and visitors looking for independent shops and fashionable London style.
