Carlisle station in 1988, seen from the forecourt at Court Square with the great round citadel towers and fortress-like station buildings dominating the scene. The photograph is full of useful late-1980s detail, including the bright red British Rail double-arrow sign, the taxis sign, busy pedestrian movement across the forecourt and a car park packed with period vehicles. Among them are a yellow Ford Fiesta and a red Rover 200, joined by other everyday family cars that root the view firmly in the decade. The station’s medieval-looking towers and arched entrance give Carlisle one of the most distinctive station frontages in Britain, and this view captures that contrast between historic architecture and ordinary modern traffic particularly well.
