This 1980s view along Cannon Street captures a changing stretch of the City where older commercial architecture still held its ground against late twentieth-century redevelopment. The ornate pale building on the corner, signed City Card Corner, stands out among the heavier traffic engineering of railings, slip roads and broad carriageways, while red double-decker buses, black cabs, vans and office workers give the scene a very typical weekday City character. One of the most interesting aspects of the photograph is how the balance of old and new has since shifted: the older nineteenth-century buildings visible here have largely survived, and in several cases look smarter today after restoration, while a number of the plainer modern office blocks in the background have since been replaced. The image is therefore a good record of Cannon Street in transition, when Victorian survivals, post-war traffic planning and now-vanished modern buildings all shared the same view.
