A 1992 view of the Cannon Cinema in Slough, showing the bulky modern frontage of the former Fulcrum Centre after its conversion into a ten-screen cinema in 1987. A large vertical Cannon Cinemas sign hangs on the ribbed concrete exterior, while crowds gather outside beneath the deep canopy and along the pedestrianised shopping area, where a banner for Slough Hospital can also be seen stretched across the street. The building had originally opened as the Fulcrum Centre before passing through a succession of cinema operators, being known at different times as the Maybox, Gallery, Cannon, MGM, Virgin, UGC and Cineworld, making this a good record of one phase in the long commercial afterlife of one of Slough’s best-known late-20th-century leisure buildings.
