Camping coaches at Aberystwyth station in 1977, standing in a quiet siding beside the platform with the town’s clock tower rising beyond the station buildings. The view is full of railway detail, from the stone platform edging and broad paving slabs to the ornate canopy brackets at left, the weathered green coach bodies, and the line of goods wagons standing on the adjacent track to the right. These former camping coaches were by then being used by the supporting society of the Vale of Rheidol Railway during its British Rail years, giving Aberystwyth one of those slightly improvised corners that added so much character to the station in the 1970s. They survived here for some years after this photograph was taken and were eventually scrapped in 1991.
