This authentic 1970s colour photograph, captured in 1978, documents the formidable Caernarfon Castle and the adjoining harbour in Gwynedd, North Wales. The archival image features the castle’s massive polygonal towers and curtain walls, built by King Edward I, as they rise above the slate-roofed buildings of the town. In the foreground, a harbour-side car park is populated with period-correct vehicles, most notably a light blue Opel Ascona B and a black Austin 1100. Further back, several classic camper vans and orange Citroën 2CVs are parked alongside local tour buses. The harbour itself shows several small white leisure boats and yachts moored at the stone quay. Scaffolding is visible on one of the central towers, indicating ongoing preservation work during the late 1970s. This factual record preserves the historic maritime setting of this UNESCO World Heritage site and the everyday tourist atmosphere of Caernarfon as it appeared in 1978.
