A view of early 1960s Detroit along Congress and First Street captures a distinctly transitional, car-centred moment in the city’s history. At the centre of the scene is the Cadillac House Motel, a modern motor-inn that opened in 1960 catering to motorists, business travellers, and convention visitors drawn to nearby Cobo Center (now Huntington Place). To the right stands Paul’s Auto Wash, which opened in 1946 and is widely regarded as the world’s first automatic car wash, reflecting Detroit’s deep connection to postwar automobile culture. Both the motel and the car wash were eventually closed and later demolished – the hotel closed in 1974 – their sites replaced by a parking structure, as the Cobo Center was enlarged.
