The Wild Mouse coaster at Butlins holiday camp, Clacton in 1966, seen high above the holiday camp amusement area with the sea glittering beyond. During the early 1960s Butlins built eight of these compact Wild Mouse coasters after purchasing the manufacturing rights from American designer Ben Schiff in 1959. Six went to their holiday camps at Bognor, Clacton, Filey, Minehead, Pwllheli and Skegness, while two more were installed at their amusement parks at Littlehampton and Skegness. Several were built on top of buildings or raised platforms, as seen here at Clacton. By most accounts they were rough-riding and expensive to maintain, and most had been scrapped within 15 to 20 years. Also visible below is the Butlin’s Motor Cycle Scramble and the camp’s miniature Triang Minic train ride running underneath the coaster structure.
