This 1986 photograph shows a large Burma Star Association floral display in Plymouth, laid out as a formal bedding scheme with the association’s star-shaped badge, crowned monogram and the dates 1945 and 1986 worked into coloured plants. The words Burma Star Assoc curve across the lower part of the display, which is set within a neatly clipped lawn island bordered by pale edging plants. Behind it are fountains, formal flowerbeds and a stone plinth, giving the whole scene the look of a carefully maintained civic garden in the town centre. It is a strong period record of municipal floral display work in the mid-1980s, and of the way wartime remembrance was still being marked prominently in public spaces through bedding arrangements like this one.
