This 1984 photograph looks down the High Street in Burford, showing the steep main street lined with stone and timber-fronted buildings as it falls away through the centre of the town. The scene is packed with period detail, from the long rows of parked 1970s and 1980s cars to the cream van and black hatchback moving down the middle of the road, while a woman crosses between the traffic carrying a red bag. On the right-hand side, signs can be picked out for the Highway Hotel, The Cotswold Inn, The Lamb Inn and Whysone’s, along with a pavement board advertising bar lunches and dinners. The old street clock on the left and the open view of green Oxfordshire countryside beyond the rooftops give the picture a strong sense of Burford’s character as a small market town set above the Windrush valley.
