This authentic color photograph, captured in the early 1990s, provides a rare technical view into the automated paint application booth at the Buick City assembly plant in Flint, Michigan. The archival image documents a high-tech “High Voltage Zone,” where car bodies would pass through a series of robotic electrostatic sprayers—visible here as the white, shrouded bell-shaped applicators lining the tunnel. This electrostatic process ensured an exceptionally even and durable finish by charging the paint particles so they were magnetically attracted to the grounded metal car body. The industrial environment features stainless steel walls, grated flooring for overspray management, and prominent “Danger” and “Do Not Enter” safety signage. Buick City was a pioneer in utilizing this level of automation to produce the Buick LeSabre, helping the facility earn numerous awards for manufacturing excellence. While the plant was closed in 1999 and the site eventually cleared, this factual record preserves the advanced robotics that once defined the peak of Flint’s automotive production.
