A striking 1974 view of the newly built Brunswick Centre, its bold terraces and concrete forms still crisp from recent completion. Designed by architect Patrick Hodgkinson and constructed between 1967 and 1972, the complex was conceived as a modernist experiment in mixed-use urban living—combining stepped residential units above with shops, cafés and public spaces at ground level.
In this image the centre’s distinctive geometry is on full display: the cascading flats with their angled balconies and generous glazing, the long concrete colonnade sheltering the retail units below, and the wide pedestrian plaza animated by planters, posters and passing shoppers. The escalator leading down to the underground supermarket—then operated by Safeway—was an innovative feature, part of a vision of traffic-free shopping within a self-contained urban quarter.
