Brooks Wharf, River Thames 1977

This authentic 1970s colour photograph captures the riverfront elevation of Brooks Wharf, located on Upper Thames Street in the City of London, in 1977. The massive Victorian warehouse is painted off-white, with its grid of multi-paned windows and iron wall ties clearly visible. A prominent feature is the arched opening for “The Samuel Pepys” tavern, a famous riverside pub established within the wharf’s structure during the mid-20th century. To the right, a hand-painted “DANGER” sign warns of the raised barge bed extending into the river. While much of the surrounding industrial landscape has changed, Brooks Wharf is still standing today, having been extensively renovated and converted into luxury apartments.
