This 1984 view along Brompton Road captures Harrods dominating the street with its vast frontage, domes, flags and long run of awnings stretching away towards Knightsbridge. The famous department store is seen in full everyday context rather than isolation, with heavy traffic flowing past including black cabs, a Commer van, a pale Ford Fiesta and a red route 30 bus heading for Portman Gate. One particularly striking detail is the Routemaster running without side advertising, an unusual sight in this period and likely a bus freshly repainted or not yet re-lettered for adverts. On the left, the frontage of Mappin & Webb can also be seen, while the mix of older commercial buildings and plainer later office blocks shows the contrast that still defined this stretch of Brompton Road in the mid-1980s. The image works especially well as a record of busy everyday Knightsbridge, where one of London’s grandest stores sat amid ordinary congestion, bus routes and shopfront trade.
