This 1982 view of Brompton Oratory captures the great west front in a far sootier state than it appears today, with the darkened Portland stone and weathered detailing giving the façade a noticeably heavier look. The giant pilasters, high arched window and columned porch still dominate the scene, but the setting is very much everyday London rather than postcard grandeur, with traffic lights, pedestrians and passing vehicles filling the foreground. The photograph is a good reminder of how many of the capital’s major churches and public buildings still looked before later cleaning and restoration brightened their exteriors, and Brompton Oratory here has a notably grimmer, more workaday presence than the cleaner building seen today.
