This 1989 street scene outside Murray’s Meat Market at 441 Brixton Road captures the busy pavement trade of late-1980s Brixton, with a fruit and vegetable stall set up beneath a red canopy directly outside the shop. The frontage of Murray’s Meat Market is clearly visible on the left, while the blue sign for Brixton Market Arcade points into the covered market beyond. The stall is crowded with period detail, from hanging bananas and pineapples to handwritten price cards, crates of peppers, tomatoes and soft fruit, and shoppers carrying bags through the narrow space between the displays and the road. A red van pulled up beside the kerb adds to the everyday working feel of the scene. It is a strong record of Brixton Road as a lively shopping street at the end of the 1980s, before later retail changes altered the frontage; the former Murray’s site is now occupied by Iceland.
