A 1970s colour photo of two British Airways RMA-type AEC Routemaster double-decker buses at Heathrow Airport during the latter half of the 20th century. Unlike traditional Routemasters, the RMA buses had a closed rear platform with front doors, making them more suitable for longer, high-speed journeys on the newly built M4 motorway. The bus in the foreground, registration NMY 641E, features the classic white and blue British Airways livery of 1977, complete with the airline’s name and “Speedbird” logo. These specialised vehicles were designed with a front-mounted luggage trailer coupling to transport passengers and their baggage between the airport terminals and the West London Air Terminal in Kensington. Passengers in period attire, including flared denim jeans and trench coats, wait near a “Town Terminal” pick-up point, while a green Range Rover is visible in the background. The scene captures a functional moment in London’s aviation history, showing the primary link for international travellers before the extension of the Piccadilly Line reached the airport in late 1977.
