This 1980s photograph captures Brighton seafront in full summer swing, with the shingle beach crowded with sunbathers, families and deckchairs below the busy promenade. The lower frontage is packed with period seaside businesses and signs, including Fish & Chips, Tea & Coffee, Toppers Bazaar, Aquarium & Dolphinarium, and multiple Walls Ice Cream adverts, while farther along the railings a large sign simply reads Amusements. Above the promenade are more fairground-style attractions, including inflatable slides and brightly coloured rides, adding to the unmistakable feel of Brighton as one of Britain’s busiest traditional seaside resorts. The dense crowds, peeling shingle beach and cluttered line of kiosks, cafés and amusement fronts make this a strong record of Brighton before the later reshaping of parts of the seafront and the disappearance of some of these older leisure businesses.
