This 1980s photograph looks across Brighton Marina during a busy boating event, with the pontoons packed with sailing yachts, motor cruisers and visiting crowds gathered along the waterfront. The marina is full of period details, from the lines of moored boats dressed with bunting and flags to the quayside spectators watching small craft manoeuvring in the central basin. Signs visible around the scene include Bay Class Yachts on the right and branding on several sails and stands around the harbour, while behind the basin are the marina buildings, slipways, parked cars and service craft that give the whole scene a distinctly working-leisure atmosphere. It is a strong record of Brighton Marina in the 1980s, capturing both the scale of the development and the popularity of boat shows and waterside events at a time when the marina was still one of the newer and more modern pieces of the Brighton seafront.
