This 1985 photograph looks east along Brighton beach towards the Palace Pier, with the broad shingle foreshore laid out with long rows of deckchairs and stacks of folded chairs waiting for visitors. In the foreground, people sit outside a small seafront refreshment terrace while a board advertises tea, coffee and snacks, and farther along the promenade a line of small sailing dinghies and beach boats has been pulled up beside the beach. The Palace Pier stretches out across the calm sea in the distance, its pavilion buildings and amusement structures clearly visible at the far end, while the hazy light gives the whole scene a quiet, slightly washed summer atmosphere. It is a strong record of Brighton before the seafront became more heavily modernised, with the beach still dominated by deckchairs, small craft and the familiar Victorian pier skyline.
