This 1980 photograph looks north along Bridge Street in Chester towards St Peter’s Church at the Cross, with the street lined by the city’s distinctive black-and-white timbered Rows and a dense mix of shops and businesses beneath them. On the right are signs for Ellis Barker, Pearl Assurance Company, Kenricks and BSM, while The City Café can also be seen farther along under the galleries. Parked in the foreground is a brown Sherpa van for P.&A. Davies Ltd, Bakers and Confectioners, Sealand, Chester, with its rear shelving open to the street, and just beyond it stands a red delivery van unloading outside the shops. The combination of Tudor-style frontages, raised walkways, commercial vehicles and the church tower at the end of the street makes this a strong everyday record of central Chester in 1980.
