This authentic 1980s colour photograph, captured in 1981, documents the Rectory Mansion in Brading, Isle of Wight, which then housed the famous Osborn-Smith’s Wax Museum. The archival image features the beautiful Early Tudor timber-framed building, known for its traditional thatched roof and galleried courtyard. At this time, the museum was a popular tourist attraction, often marketed as being located in one of the oldest houses on the island, with parts of the structure dating back to the 13th century. The museum was famous for its eclectic and sometimes macabre displays, including the tragic chimney sweep Valentine Gray, the “skivvy in the attic,” and various historical scenes. A red sign above the entrance clearly identifies the “Wax Museum,” and the surrounding streetscape reflects the quiet, historic character of Brading High Street in the early 1980s. This factual record preserves the appearance of a beloved island landmark that entertained visitors for 45 years before its closure in early 2010.
