This 1980s photograph shows the Bourne Valley Inn at St Mary Bourne, near Andover, with its long brick frontage, white-painted shutters and steep tiled roof giving it the look of a substantial village inn. The signs across the front advertise Courage, Badger Beer, Visa, Diners Club International and Access, while boards by the doors read “Entrance to bars and restaurant” and “Inn food, morning coffee, bed and breakfast”. Parked outside are a white BMW saloon with the registration B757 KBL, a red Ford Escort to the right, and part of a Datsun 120Y to the left. Together with the painted inn sign and the small Beer Garden plaque on the wall, it makes a good record of a traditional Hampshire village hotel and pub in the late twentieth century.
