Boston station in 1956, with a DMU standing in the platform beneath the broad iron canopies and footbridge that once gave the station a much grander appearance than it has today. The photograph is full of useful railway detail, including the green-painted canopy columns, the lattice footbridge, the multiple running lines and the early diesel unit itself with its dark bodywork and cream window surrounds. This was still the era before the great East Lincolnshire closures, when the main line continued north from Peterborough through Spalding, Boston, Alford and Louth, and views like this capture Boston as part of a far more extensive railway network than the one that survives now. The vanished canopies especially make the scene feel like a glimpse into a much larger and busier station.
