The Pin Mill at Bodnant Garden in 1978, seen across a narrow bridge and rushing water in a secluded, heavily planted corner of the gardens at Tal-y-Cafn. The stone building, with its arched windows, moss-covered roof and tall clipped conifers, makes an especially striking subject here, framed by mature trees and rocky foreground planting. This is one of Bodnant’s most distinctive architectural features, and by the time this photograph was taken the garden was already long established as one of the great horticultural showpieces of North Wales, combining formal design with wooded dells, water features and carefully composed views. The Pin Mill itself had been rebuilt at Bodnant in 1939 after being brought from Woodchester in Gloucestershire, where it had originally been built as a garden house in about 1720 before later industrial use.
