Atlantic City Convention Hall (now Boardwalk Hall), Atlantic City, New Jersey, 1960s
Atlantic City Convention Hall photographed in 1962, when it stood at the heart of the Boardwalk as one of the city’s most important entertainment and events venues. Completed in 1929, the building is distinguished by its vast barrel-vaulted roof, which at the time created the largest unobstructed interior space in the world. During the mid-20th century it hosted major boxing matches, political conventions, concerts, ice shows, and the Miss America Pageant, making it a national landmark of leisure and spectacle. Small souvenir shops along the Boardwalk edge underline how closely the hall was woven into everyday seaside tourism. The building survives today, restored and renamed Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.
