A calm 1976 riverside scene at Hammersmith, with the Thames at low tide exposing the muddy foreshore and moored boats resting on the riverbed. Standing prominently along the embankment are two of the area’s best-known historic pubs: the Rutland Arms (centre-left), then carrying Watney’s branding, and the Blue Anchor (right), a landmark on Lower Mall since the early 18th century.
The Rutland Arms—rebuilt in Victorian times—retains its distinctive arched ground-floor windows and sturdy brick frontage, while the Blue Anchor’s pale blue façade and iron balcony overlook the tidal river, as they have for generations of West London drinkers. Both pubs sit just upstream from Hammersmith Bridge and have long been favourite viewing points for the annual Oxford–Cambridge Boat Race.
