This authentic 1960s colour photograph, captured in 1965, documents the historic Black Boy Inn located within the medieval town walls of Caernarfon, Gwynedd. The archival image features the inn’s classic white-washed facade and prominent hand-painted gable end, which details its long history: “Built Circa 1522” and “Restored as an Hotel in 1954.” The signage also advertises it as a “Free, Fully Licensed Commercial & Family Hotel” with the period-correct telephone number “Phone, C’von 789.” Several traditional hanging signs are visible, including one for the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) and an AA (Automobile Association) star rating plaque. Two children in mid-1960s attire are seen standing on the narrow pavement beside the stone-built structure. The street scene preserves the quiet, slightly weathered atmosphere of the town’s Northgate Street area, with a simple chain-link fence bordering a vacant plot in the foreground. This factual record preserves the mid-20th-century appearance of one of the oldest surviving inns in North Wales as it looked in 1965.
