Black Five No. 44951 at Doncaster station in 1966, standing with a rake of maroon coaches beneath the lattice footbridge and amid a wide spread of pointwork and running lines. The photograph is full of useful railway detail, including the locomotive’s plain black BR finish, the station pilot disc on the smokebox door, the long line of corridor stock behind, the ornate ironwork of the bridge, and the broad, open layout that made Doncaster one of the great railway centres of the East Coast Main Line. With steam drifting lightly from the safety valves and the locomotive waiting in bright sunlight, the scene captures the last years of everyday main line steam at a station long associated with heavy railway traffic, locomotive changes and Anglo-Scottish expresses.
